Bob Raymond and Marcus Paint Company. Bob has been an outstanding part of this family for the last 45 years and he has earned the right to hang his hat up and enjoy the retired life. We wish you luck, love, and adventure in this next chapter of your life, we hope that you can pop In every once in a while, to say hi. We will all miss you greatly; your impact on coatings will be felt for years to come, and the lab won’t be the same without you. I asked Bob what 45 years at Marcus Paint meant to him:
I received my first paycheck from Marcus Paint Company in 1980. It’s hard to believe I’ve been part of this family for 45 years. My journey started in the lab as a lab tech assistant, working for Calvin Marcus. Calvin was a brilliant man, though his legendary temper made him memorable in the paint business. Stories of his “blowups” are still talked about to this day. He had a unique way of delivering “course corrections,” something Steve and I still laugh about. Despite his intensity, I respected Calvin for his knowledge and leadership. I’m grateful to have worked under him and to have learned so much from his sharp mind.
Over the years, I worked my way up at Marcus Paint, moving from lab tech assistant to lab tech, then formulator, Technical Director, and eventually R&D Director. My progression wasn’t just due to time or attrition (but it didn’t hurt)—it was thanks in large part to the steady support of Terri Marcus. Terri is one of the most influential people in my life. She shaped my career and made me a better person. Like Calvin, she has a strong personality and sharp intellect. Her reactions to situations were always unpredictable, which kept me on my toes and earned my respect. Her drive for excellence and passion for innovation pushed me to grow in ways I never expected.
Steve Marcus is probably one of the kindest people I’ve ever met. His generosity of spirit is unmatched, he’s always willing to help anyone in need. In addition to managing the day-to-day operations at Marcus Paint, he serves as a volunteer firefighter, dedicating his time to helping others in their moments of greatest need. I don’t think I’ve ever met another person quite like him, and I feel fortunate to have had him as part of my life and career.
As I reflect on my time at Marcus Paint, I see how much the company and the Marcus family have shaped my life. Terri’s relentless drive for technology and learning fit perfectly with my own curiosity and passion for growth. She trusted my decisions (most of the time) and respected them—even when I didn’t always get things right. Terri and I also share a love of dogs, which added a personal touch to our connection. She often brought her two dogs, Grady and Little Man, to the office. They always headed straight to my bottom desk drawer for treats, which Terri made sure to provide so they stayed on their strict diet.
After 45 years, I can confidently say I will never regret dedicating most of my life to Marcus Paint. The company challenged me, supported me, and shaped me into the person I am today. I can’t imagine a more fulfilling career or a better group of people to work with. It’s been an incredible journey, and as I step into retirement, I do so with immense gratitude for everything the Marcus family has given me.
Thank you Dr. Bob for everything you have done here at Marcus Paint Company, We will miss you!
